What are Commercial Ducts?

Commercial ducts are essential components of HVAC systems in commercial and industrial spaces, responsible for distributing conditioned air to maintain indoor comfort, temperature control, and air quality. FabricAir fabric-based commercial ducts offer a modern alternative that simplifies design, reduces installation time, and improves airflow efficiency. Thanks to their lightweight construction, FabricAir duct systems are especially well-suited for high-ceiling spaces. Their flexibility enables engineers to specify airflow patterns with precision – something that’s difficult to achieve with conventional ducts.

Explore more about how our systems are used in diverse settings by visiting our commercial ducts application pages for industries like food markets, offices, airports, data centers, etc.

FAQ

How do fabric ducts compare to traditional metal ducts in commercial buildings?

Fabric ducts offer a range of performance and design advantages over traditional metal ductwork in commercial buildings. They provide more uniform air distribution, operate quietly, and can usually be installed more quickly and with simple tools. Unlike metal ducts that require grilles, dampers, and insulation, fabric ducts are engineered to deliver conditioned air directly through their surface, reducing energy loss and improving comfort. Additionally, they resist condensation and can be removed and machine-washed, offering easier maintenance. Learn more about the advantages of using fabric ducts instead of metal in our blog.

Can fabric ducts handle the airflow requirements of large commercial facilities?

Yes. Fabric duct systems are custom engineered to meet the airflow needs of any commercial environment, including offices, retail spaces, and distribution centers. Airflow velocity and dispersion patterns are precisely calculated based on your project requirements, using a variety of flow models to ensure consistent comfort across the entire space.

How do you clean/maintain fabric ducts?

All fabric-based solutions are designed to be as easy to maintain as possible. They are lightweight, therefore, it is simple to install or detach them, machine wash and put them back on again without any heavy machinery or many man-hours.

As a leading fabric duct manufacturer, we are constantly looking for solutions that benefit contractors, engineers, and end-users and ensure the best possible air distribution without drafts or frequent maintenance.

Since 2010, we have been using laser technology to create both primary and secondary flow models from our fabric ducts. One of the advantages of this technology is that the
previously recommended washing intervals are no longer necessary for all installations.

However, some projects with high hygienic requirements, such as the food processing or pharmaceutical industries, still require fabric ducts to be washed regularly. We advise you to always observe and follow the hygienic requirements for each individual installation.

Zip-a-duct ducts with the following flow models do not require regular washing from a technical point of view:
SonicFlow™
PerfoFlow™
OriFlow™
NozzFlow™
JetFlow™*

Ducts using exclusively FabFlow™ should be washed annually to reduce unnecessary pressure loss. Ducts using exclusively MicroFlow™ may see a slight accumulation of dust particles inside the duct over time. This does not cause a significant pressure loss but may lead to the desire/need to wash them. When using FabFlow™ or MicroFlow™, adequate pre-filtering should be used.

Are fabric ducts suitable for high-ceiling areas like warehouses or showrooms?

Absolutely. Fabric ducts are especially well-suited to spaces with high-ceiling like warehouses, showrooms, and open-plan retail areas. The lightweight materials reduce structural load, and directional airflow models can deliver conditioned air precisely to the occupied zone without creating drafts. Fabric ducts can be suspended from nearly any height and configured to work around existing infrastructure, making them an ideal option for complex layouts.

Are fabric duct systems customizable to fit branding or architectural requirements?

Yes, FabricAir systems are highly customizable in terms of color, size, shape, and even with printed graphics. Many commercial buildings use fabric ducts to complement or enhance interior aesthetics. Ducts are available in a range of standard colors, and custom color matching is available to align with brand identity or interior design. Logos or patterns can also be directly onto the duct surface, making them both functional and visually appealing.
